The story behind I lie to my lawyer
I wrote “I Lie To My Lawyer” back in the ‘90s based on several high-profile criminal cases at the time in which the famous rich defendants with famous rich attorneys were unsurprisingly found innocent of their accused transgressions. Somehow the lyrics of the song manage to remain topical no matter what era we’re in.
The lead vocal is sung by the legendary Gary Joe Wade and was recorded in one take at his home in Medford, Oregon. The late great Jet Kanani, my musical partner in The Lelands for 27 years, recorded his ukulele part in the InStead Music studio shortly before his passing on August 21, 2021. Tom Davis, as close to a musical genius as anyone I’ve ever known plays both the bass and the soprano sax (not at the same time but he probably could do it). My good friend Duane Brown, one of the world-renowned Comstock Cowboys, the house band at the Bucket Of Blood in Virginia City, Nevada, is playing the pedal steel guitar. I’m playing drums, percussion, rhythm guitar, and singing background vocals.
